With a shaping career spanning four decades, Roger Hinds has played an integral role in the evolution of the shortboard. From the transition era’s stripped-down longboards to the refined craftsmanship of modern designs, Hinds honed his skills under legendary mentors like Ed Angulo, Jeff Edwards, and Kent Smith.
During the 1970s, Hinds immersed himself in the North Shore surf scene, shaping for iconic brands like Country Surfboards and Lightning Bolt, with a roster of team riders ranging from Jock Sutherland and Mike Armstrong to longboard world champions Rusty Keaulana and Taylor Jensen. His talents extended into production shaping for prestigious labels like Blue Hawaii, Russ K, Harbour, Hobie, and Weber, and he served as head shaper for Bear USA.
Hinds’ attention to detail earned him acclaim in the surfboard industry, leading to the creation of some of the most popular plugs for Clark Foam and US Blanks. His craftsmanship was recognized at The Boardroom Show, where he won the Icons of Foam Shape-off back-to-back in 2014 and 2015, honoring Ben Aipa and Rusty Preisendorfer. He also placed second in the Ultimate Craftsman Project, narrowly missing the top spot by just one-tenth of a point.
With a commitment to precision and excellence, Hinds' mastery is evident in every step of his boards' construction—from shaping to glassing, coloring, and polishing. Roger Hinds lives and breathes the art of surfboard building, creating surfboards of impeccable quality that stand as a testament to his decades-long dedication to the craft.
